YA Cancer hits Grey’s
Submitted by the stupid cancer blog
Did you watch Grey’s Anatomy last night? If you missed it, here’s the recap: One of the main characters, twenty-nine year-old Izzy Stevens (Played by Katherine Heigl) was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma. While I was angry that the only TV show I watch regularly is now going to feature a plot line that represents my own personal worst nightmare, I have to say way to go Grey’s!
If I had a dollar for each time I’ve heard the words “At least it’s only skin cancer,” or “What’s the big deal, it’s just skin cancer,” I could cover quite a few of my health insurance co-pays. I’m glad that a nationally watched show is raising awareness about the cancer, and the fact that it affects the young adult population.

Watched it and I love the show! I am with you, it is about time that young adults battling cancer issues are out there nationally. I know with all the research I have done on the subject since my 27 year old son passed away with leukemia that it has become alarming. The survival rates for young adults are very low and have not improved in over 20 years. The reason: the biological make-up of young adults makes it harder for traditional treatments for cancer to be successful for this age group (19-39).
I will be sticking to the tube to see how the producers of Grey’s deals with this subject.
